What is the THE KENNEL CLUB OF JERSEY

The Kennel Club of Jersey, or the Jersey Dog Club as it was called until 2000 was formed in March 1888. Located in the British Channel Island 14 miles from the French coast we undertake all the functions of any other world Kennel Club with our own Registration system and Show Calendar. The Club was established for the 'Betterment of all Dogs' and as such is proud to have affiliated to it the other dog clubs and societies of the island looking after Agility, Obedience Handling and Training, as well as running its own Pedigree and Companion Shows throughout the year. The KCJ is also affiliated with and has a close bond with the Guernsey Kennel Club and the Kennel Club in the UK We hold three Jersey Championship Shows each year and three Members Shows, In February each year we host the Channel Islands Dog of the Year Competition with dogs gaining entry through the ten shows held in Jersey and Guernsey. The KCJ is a non-profit making organisation and does not employ any staff, the fifteen strong Committee meets once a month to conduct Club business. One of the busiest roles on Committee is the Registrar who keeps all the records of the breeding of dogs on the island as well as working with other Kennel Clubs to ensure the accuracy of the records held, this is also done on a voluntary basis.Membership to the Club is open to all although the ownership of a dog and living in Jersey is preferred and each application is looked at on its own merit. Some think that part of the dog world is elitist. We strive to change that view. What matters to us more than pedigree or non-pedigree is the health of the dog and the relationship dogs have with us and how they form part of our lives.

If you would like to know more about the KCJ please get in touch or visit one of our shows, they are listed on Calendar.

There are 4 titles to be completed for each year - Dog of the Year, Puppy of the Year, Veteran of the Year & Brace of the Year. The competition is held in February each year.

How Do I Qualify?

You can qualify at any of the 10 shows held in Jersey & Guernsey.

  • To qualify for Dog of the Year you need to win Group 1
  • To qualify for Puppy of the Year you need to win Puppy Group 1 (your dog does not still need to be a puppy to compete at the DOY)
  • To qualify for Veteran of the Year you need to win Best Veteran in Show
  • To qualify for Brace of the Year you need to win Best Brace in Show

Once I qualify what happens next?

In December all qualifiers will receive an invitation. At the bottom of the invitation will be a tear off strip which you will need to fill in & return with your entry fee, if you wish to enter, by the stated closing date.

What happens on the day?

Like other shows you will need to arrive in good time, so you are ready for the start of the show. On arrival you will need to collect you catalogue & ring number.

The running order is

  • Puppy of the Year Group Semi Finals
  • Dog of the Year Group Semi Finals
  • Veteran of the Year Final
  • Brace of the Year Final
  • Puppy of the Year Final
  • Dog of the Year Final

In the Group Semi Finals, each group will be judged separately & from all the qualifying dogs the judge will select 2 exhibits to complete in the Final.

All dogs that qualify for a final will receive a rosette.

In the Finals the judge will select a winner & reserve.

The day is finished off with the Club's annual dinner.

Thinking of buying a Puppy?

The Kennel Club of Jersey is not out to try and sell you a puppy. We do not mind if you want to get a pedigree, crossbreed or rescue dog. We were formed in 1888 for the betterment of all dogs in Jersey and part of this is achieved through providing information. We hope this sheet will help you in finding a healthy dog.

There are always dogs that need re-homing for advice on this contact the JSPCA who will be pleased to help. They will also be able to give you advice on the needs of the dogs available, there may be more work on your part initially, but the feedback from the dog long term will be overwhelming.

However should you want a Registered Pedigree puppy, one that can trace its parentage back through official Kennel Club records either in Jersey or any other Kennel Club then here is a crib sheet that should help you find the right dog for life. Even if you don't want a Pedigree dog, please take a moment to read this page before you commit to having a dog - for life.
